Julian drove the rental car, a two-year-old Ford Travia Deluxe, while Mildred sat in the back seat with Gucky—an arrangement that irritated Julian. Gucky had insisted on it. Mildred was fairly sure the Ilt was having fun provoking Julian on purpose but that he didn’t mean anything truly bad by it.

The Mousebeaver lay stretched out, his eyes open, and had her tickle his ears. He’d taken off the robe, which he’d found pretty uncomfortable, and the hat as well. His head rested on Mildred’s lap like on a cushion. Every once in a while, he made a mocking remark about one of the street signs. Astonishingly, he seemed able to read English perfectly. This was quite a surprise to Mildred.

“How did you learn it? From humans’ minds?”

“What would an Ilt be without a few mysteries?” Gucky squeaked, rubbing his head against her leg. As he did so, he glanced innocently into the rear-view mirror—at Julian.

“You have way more mysteries than answers,” Julian grumbled from the front, meeting the Ilt’s gaze and then quickly looking at Mildred as if to reassure himself that she was okay with the Ilt’s head on her lap.

“I’m not the only one,” the Ilt retorted, sounding surprisingly friendly. “Now that I don’t have to concentrate on jumping around all over the place, I think it’s high time you told me a little about your father, don’t you think?”

Julian’s voice sounded wary. “Can’t you read it all from my thoughts?”

“Only if you think about him. So far, all I’ve picked up is white noise and a whole bunch of whining. Tell me everything you know about your father’s whereabouts. Did he have enemies?”

Julian’s eyebrows knitted together, but then he relaxed his features, took a brief look at Mildred in the rear-view mirror, and began to explain. “My father defended the Arkonide Crest da Zoltral in the Supreme Court. He’s one of the top lawyers in the United States. His fees are in the tens of millions. At the same time, ever since I can remember, he’s been an advocate for people who couldn’t afford any lawyer. I’m pretty sure he made a ton of enemies by defending Crest in this show trial, set up by Drummond. I can well imagine someone who’s dead-set against the Arkonides being behind it.”

While Julian continued explaining at length, Mildred looked out the window. Since starting their drive, they’d been listening to regional online radio. They’d been following news about their homeland online back in Terrania too. Following Drummond’s inglorious end, the United States had fallen apart into two camps. Those who were “pro-Rhodan” welcomed Terraria and the new era with open arms, more than ready for humanity’s venture to the stars. To them, Perry Rhodan was a hero. One to follow and support.

The “anti-Rhodan” adherents wanted everything to stay the way it was and for America to maintain its supremacy in the world’s power structure. They saw Rhodan’s actions in the Gobi as treason. In their view, Crest and the Arkonide technology should belong to the American nation.
